Introduction to Motivational Interviewing
Why should you attend this workshop?
A frequent problem for learners of MI is the inability to get feedback on skills development following training. Included in your fee for this training will be access to a web based platform to provide this feedback via the participants responding in real time to client scenarios.
In this three day, interactive workshop participants will learn the concepts of Motivational Interviewing as they are being described by William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD in the next edition of MI due to be published in 2012. Multiple demonstrations and opportunities for practice are provided. Most importantly, participants will be able to embody the 'Spirit of MI' in their own settings within the parameters of their interactions with clients.
Post workshop, attendees will receive a link for accessing interactive MI case vignettes. This web based platform will be an additional tool for training and for feedback from your course instructor. One MI coaching call is included in the fee.
Workshop CE of 20 is offered via the Association of Social Work Boardshttp://www.aswb.org.
Fee of $595 includes: workshop, handout, post workshop skills assessment and coaching call.
Student rate available.
Motivational Interviewing is defined by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, the authors of the approach, as a 'collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular focus to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.' 2012
The concept of Motivational Interviewing evolved from experience with problem drinkers and now encompasses in its effectiveness work with a wide range of concerns such as health care improvement, high risk sexual behaviors, diabetes management, and mental health problems. Professionals from across the world are now using a Motivational Interviewing approach to explore and resolve ambivalence for change. A growing body of research supports this method for eliciting and supporting change talk that leads to action.
Reading two texts, Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change, Miller and Rollnick, 2002, Guilford Press and Motivational Interviewing in Health Care, Rollnick, Miller, and Butler, 2007, Guilford Press is recommended prior to attendance.
