Description:

This training will allow participants who have completed a previous training in Motivational Interviewing to further develop their skills in applying MI. Using lecture and group practice, participants will expand on basic concepts, identify specific application for their work settings, and receive in the moment coaching for skill enhancement.

Candidates for this workshop should have a previous training in motivational interviewing and should be using MI in the current work setting, supervising MI or planning a MI project. The format of the course allows for a high degree of practice and individualized feedback. This workshop will provide a relaxed and informal environment for learning, with opportunities for professional networking with others using MI in a variety of settings. Class size will be strictly limited to 6 participants.

It is assumed that participants will have read the text, Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change, Miller and Rollnick, 2002, Guilford Press prior to attendance.

Instructor:

Cathy Cole, MSSW, LCSW is an educator and clinician. She received her Masters of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee and has maintained a varied clinical and education practice throughout her career. Since her training in Motivational Interviewing in 1995, she has provided extensive training.

Ms. Cole is a Consulting Associate in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke University Medical School and a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.

Agenda: Two day intensive MI training full schedule

Advanced intensives are designed to allow for participant practice with the trainer providing coaching. MI concepts are reviewed and reinforced via the material and discussion that emerges from the practice. The trainer assures that practice opportunities are available for a full range of MI concepts. Participants will receive a full handout and are encouraged to read the text Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change, William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, PhDs, Guilford Press, 2002. It is expected that participants will come with varying levels of practice experience and with examples of ambivalence around behavior change to use in practice.
