ADOPTING THE MI PRINCIPLES ON AN AGENCY LEVEL
The fullest implementation of MI is achieved when staff are trained in the use
of
MI and all of the operation of the agency is consistent with MI principles. I
offer
consultation that will assess all levels of function in the agency, from how the
phones are answered, clients greeted, intake achieved and provide guidance
in making changes to incorporate MI into the full process of work. At a
recent
workshop, a staff member, responding to a crisis, remarked that he was able
to
handle the situation more effectively by using MI as an approach. A
receptionist
remarked that she now would use MI in her client interactions.
Please email me at cathy@cathycoletraining for
more information.
ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participant's work setting.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants for Supervising MI, Advanced and Introductory MI.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press. Additional source material: Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Psychological Problems, ed. Arkowitz, Westra, Miller, and Rollnick, Guilford 2007; Motivational Interviewing In Health Care, Rollnick, Miller, and Butler, Guilford, 2007.
MAY MAIN FEATURE A REFRESHER ON MI WITH A FOCUS ON GUIDING, FOLLOWING AND DIRECTING
Motivational Interviewing is: &978; A way to have a conversation with another person who is not certain about making a behavioral change &978; Recognizes that ambivalence is normal and needs to be explored &*978; The method of the conversation focuses on what is important to the other person, what is getting in the way, what change would look like, and where the person would like to begin
MI involves the conversation styles of: &978; Guiding—partnering to determine where we are going and how are we going to get there; use of open questions that focus on eliciting change talk &978; Following—listening with the goal of being able to reflect back to assure understanding and to offer an invitation to say more &*978; Directing—Seeking or providing information
Conversation styles involve: &978; Asking &978; Really Listening &978; Responding with a focus on using reflections as much as possible, keeping a ratio of no more than three questions to one reflection or a higher standard one question with two reflections &978; The client speaking more than the counselor &*978; Setting a mutual agenda
Conversation style does not involve: &978; Question after question, even if they are open questions! &978; Telling the client what to do/how to solve the problem &978; Providing feedback or information without permission &978; Dismissing what the client sees as important
Asking might sound like this in the three conversation styles: &978; How does drinking impact your life? (directing…I want information) &978; What would work for you to help you change that pattern? (guiding-- working with client to solve problem) &*978; How are you holding up with trying to avoid drinking? (following with the goal of understanding)
Following might sound like this in the three conversation styles: &978; You understand that drinking and drug use can create problems but you are not certain how this applies to you. (directing--I hear what you are asking for) &978; You are concerned that getting into trouble with drinking and using will mess up your college goals. (guiding) &*978; This whole focus on drinking and using has really caused you lots of worry. (following)
Directing might sound like this in the three conversation styles:
&978; The best choice I can suggest is to avoid any marijuana use during this
probation time. (directing--this is what I recommend)
&978; Not using during this probation time is what we recommend, but what do
you think about trying this? (guiding)
&*978; It is stressful to change a pattern, like socializing by using substances.
(following)
Keep practicing!
