SUPERVISING MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING June 23-25, 2008 http://www.cathycoletraining.com/trainingsupervisingmi.php Purpose of workshop: to provide a format for self assessment, supervision or peer consultation for determining level of and improvement of MI consistent skills.
Format: use on the MIA STEP process to rate recorded interviews
Participants should be knowledgeable of Motivational Interviewing with the ability to demonstrate and recognize skills that are consistent with the practice of MI. This is not a workshop to train the use of MI skills but participants already practicing MI can expect an increased awareness of MI consistent practice and be able to compare their level of practice to the standards.

MI COACHING--TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ONGOING SUPERVISION OF YOUR MI PROGRESS VIA COACHING For individuals and agencies with previous MI training either with me or another MI trainer, I offer ongoing coaching/supervision in the application of MI. Generally, this coaching takes place by phone. You can arrange for individual or group coaching. Please email me at cathy@cathycoletraining for more information.
ADOPTING THE MI PRINCIPLES ON AN AGENCY LEVEL
The fullest implementation of MI is achieved when staff are trained in the use
of
MI and all of the operation of the agency is consistent with MI principles. I
offer
consultation that will assess all levels of function in the agency, from how the
phones are answered, clients greeted, intake achieved and provide guidance
in making changes to incorporate MI into the full process of work. At a
recent
workshop, a staff member, responding to a crisis, remarked that he was able
to
handle the situation more effectively by using MI as an approach. A
receptionist
remarked that she now would use MI in her client interactions.
Please email me at cathy@cathycoletraining for
more information.
ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participant's work setting.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants for Supervising MI, Advanced and Introductory MI.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press. Additional source material: Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Psychological Problems, ed. Arkowitz, Westra, Miller, and Rollnick, Guilford 2007; Motivational Interviewing In Health Care, Rollnick, Miller, and Butler, Guilford, 2007.
APRIL MAIN FEATURE USING METHODS TO ELICIT CHANGE TALK
As was discussed last month the goal of MI is to resolve ambivalence about change and focusing on the elements of change talk provides the process that allows the client to fully explore the ambivalence. The methods of eliciting change talk and the process of strengthening commitment to change emanate from these elements.
Let's go back to our situation from last month of a person considering a
career change who is not certain about whether to make a change or not.
This is a situation where we are directive in reinforcing change talk toward
the goal of resolving ambivalence but where there is not an outcome that
would be viewed as a preferred one.
(I) is for Interviewer and (C) is for Client
I--Mr. Smith, what did you want to discuss today? (open question)
C--Oh please, call me Joe. Well, I have been driving myself a little crazy trying to decide whether to change careers.
I--This has been weighing heavily on your mind. (complex reflection)
C--Exactly! I think about it all the time and have restless dreams about how to make a decision.
I--Tell me more. (open question that allows Joe to decide in what direction to take the conversation)
C--I am currently a salesman and I travel a lot. Although I have made good money and have enjoyed it pretty much, I just don't know that I want to keep doing this the remainder of my working life.
I: As you look to the future, you are not convinced this is what you want to continue doing. (reflection)
C: Yes, I am still young, have been able to save some money but this lifestyle is not always that good for me.....(trails off, looks thoughtful)
I: While there have been advantages, you are beginning to look at the down side. (complex reflection)
C: When I travel, I usually don't eat all that well but more importantly, I drink a good bit, particularly with clients or just from being bored. I also don't have much of a chance to date, keep up a relationship. I guess all of this is okay for someone like me in my early 30's, but what about as I get older?
I: A pattern of drinking too much and being alone does not fit with how you want to view your future. (complex reflection)
C: Right; I want to meet someone, settle down a bit and eventually have a
family; I guess, to my surprise, have a life like the one I grew up with!
Seemed kind of boring to me then, but now I see some good things about it.
I: It has thrown you off guard, to find yourself relating to what did not seem all that appealing at one time! (complex reflection)
C: In some ways, I think I decided on the kind of work I did because how my
mom and dad lived was not all that exciting to me....at home except for
vacations/trips, raising a family, having fun but not getting out of control.
Now when I think of not having to be on the road, driving, on airplanes, in my
own bed at night....all that seems really appealing....but I just can't decide.
Maybe I am just tired, need a long break.
I: It's not clear to you what to do. I am wondering if we could look at it this way....thinking about what how your life might be in say, 3 years, if you do make a change and if you do not. (looking forward)
C: Hmmm....I mostly think about where my next business trip needs to be....3 years....if I keep doing this, I'll have more money because I make a good bit; I'll have visited more cities....well more hotels; I probably will not have had much time to date, find someone who I want to spend a life with; I'll just keep thinking one day it will happen without my needing to stop for it...that's how I do it now....but I haven't really had any dates recently either!
I: So a mix on continuing as you currently are; and on the other side, if you do make a change. (reflection and looking forward)
C: Well, if I make a change it would mean going back to school for a master's degree; I have thought about accounting because I like the math part of this work, making budgets, projections, making sure it all works out right. I imagine, even with school, I would have more time to socialize, even do fun things like sailing, playing softball for some local group; I am sure I would find some interesting people to date and maybe one of them would be right for me. But.....would the life of an accountant be too boring?
I: You can visualize quite a positive life for yourself with a change and yet doubts are there. (complex reflection)
C: Mostly I would need to not do that kind of work in a way that would be boring.
I: And if you decided to make this change, how might you be able to accomplish that? (open question)
And so the conversation would continue.
Keep practicing!
