COMING THIS YEAR! As all of you know, taking action is proof of resolving ambivalence. Making a public declaration of what this action will be is a further commitment step. So, it that spirit, I am announcing that I am taking the initial steps to create a series of MI demonstration DVDs and a MI book/ digest/practice guide. Both of these are intended to supplement the already existing excellent MI text and training videos. I'll let you know when these are ready!
ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participant's work setting.
I offer all participants the opportunity to submit a 15-minute audio-tape of an interview using the MI approach before and after each workshop. This will allow for you to have feedback on your progress in learning.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants, both in Advanced and Introductory MI; Distance Learning classes are limited to 10.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
MAY MAIN FEATURE
ADDRESSING IMPORTANCE VIA VALUES AND GOALS
One of the methods of ELICITING CHANGE TALK focuses on life values and goals for the client. In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), values are considered our overall aspirations on areas such as health, family, community, spirituality, work. We look at our behavior in relationship to these values and take a reading on how consistently we are living. So if the value is the direction on the compass/our bearing in life, then looking at the consistency of our behavior lets us know if we are or are not heading in the direction that the compass is pointing.
It can be useful for clients to discuss the importance of making or adopting behavioral changes in relationship to consistency with values. That leads to addressing increasing importance, determining barriers, addressing confidence, and then making a commitment. One way to address this is to have the client determine values and then discuss the current issue in relationship to the value(s).
Let's stay with our example from last month and focus now on values; C is for client and I is for interviewer.
I: ‘So, Harry, let me see if I can pull this together. You have looked at all the reasons that say finally getting a handle on your weight is important: high blood sugars, blood pressure up, clothes don’t fit, can’t exercise as easily, some not so good feedback from your new girlfriend and now you are somewhat ready to tackle this. However, with all you are juggling in life, getting a handle on your weight still does not make it to the front of your list.' (summary reflection)
C: 'Yes,I know I need to do this; I just can't figure out how to make it more of a priority.'
I: ‘It’s clear you want to do this; (reflection); maybe we could come at this from a different direction if you want.’ (adding some direction with permission)
C: Sure, I need something!'
I: ‘Let’s move away from this current weight issue and look at what we talk about as values, our overall aspirations on areas such as health, family, community, spirituality. What would you say are important values for you?’(Elicit)
C: ‘Hmmm, interesting idea; work is definitely a value for me, being able to stay on top of being a good architect.’
I: ‘Okay, work; and what else might you want to add if you think about values that connect with this weight issue.' (continuing to elicit and avoiding premature focus)
C: ''Family is important to me. I consider my girlfriend as family, think we might eventually get married; my parents are important; I have nieces and nephews that I love to spend time with and I hope to be a father some day myself. And of course, health is important to me. Those three are the top of my list.’
I: ‘So work, family, and health. If you look at the weight management issue, how would you know if you were addressing that in a way that is consistent with these value areas?’ (open question to develop discrepancy)
C: 'Interesting to think about it that way….seems like the important thing here is attending to my health so I can be as healthy as possible so I can continue to work and be available to my current and hopefully future family.'
I: ‘In looking at the weight management issues now, what behavior would be consistent with that overall value of health?’ (open question to envision)
C: 'Obviously (laughing and reacting as if the light bulb just went off), getting a handle on my weight; I guess it is just easy to put this off.’
I: ‘So where are you now in how you might want to proceed?' (open question)
C: ‘Well, I have looked at a plan; the online Weight Watchers site and it is easy to join and develop a plan for what to eat each day, even if I don’t cook all the time; there is also a way to record my weight loss, keep track of things. I can’t go to those meetings, won’t work for me, but I could let me girlfriend see the plan, ask her to support it without trying to take it over. If I can look at the plan for eating each day and check off each time I did it, that would get me more organized. That is what I did to get the business going.’
I: ‘That is a really specific plan; what would help you stay consistent with this plan, to be able to focus on the reason for this in relationship to those values you outlined?' (open question to strengthen commitment)
C: ‘I have a picture of my family from our last Christmas gathering; I think I'll put that on my refrigerator and have a copy on my desk at my office; that will help me remember I have to stay healthy in order to be around for them.!’
I: 'Sounds like a plan; I'll look forward to hearing how it is going.'
Keep practicing!
