COMING THIS YEAR! As all of you know, taking action is proof of resolving ambivalence. Making a public declaration of what this action will be is a further commitment step. So, it that spirit, I am announcing that I am taking the initial steps to create a series of MI demonstration DVDs and a MI book/ digest/practice guide. Both of these are intended to supplement the already existing excellent MI text and training videos. I'll let you know when these are ready!
ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participant's work setting.
I offer all participants the opportunity to submit a 15-minute audio-tape of an interview using the MI approach before and after each workshop. This will allow for you to have feedback on your progress in learning.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants, both in Advanced and Introductory MI; Distance Learning classes are limited to 10.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
APRIL MAIN FEATURE
STRENGTHENING CONFIDENCE
The emphasis in working with people around change in the MI method is always on degrees of importance, confidence, and readiness. At times a person’s importance around change may be high and even readiness high, but with a major hindrance of confidence. A person might say ‘I know this is important and I know I am ready to do something, but I am not so sure I can’.
The utilization of elicit, respond, elicit remains a good guide in exploring ambivalence around confidence and in assisting the client in strengthening confidence.
Elicit: We ask/elicit from the client to determine any number of things: Main concern, information already known about a problem/need, how they want to proceed/make a plan for change Respond: We then respond with open questions, reflection/summary, and adding information (if needed and with permission) Elicit: We now allow the client to respond and continue on.
Let's consider an example; C is for client and I is for interviewer
I: ‘So, Harry, let me see if I can pull this together. You have looked at all the reasons that say finally getting a handle on your weight is important: high blood sugars, blood pressure up, clothes don’t fit, can’t exercise as easily, some not so good feedback from your new girlfriend and now you are ready to tackle this. However, when we looked at the confidence scale, that was still low, a 3 on a 10 point scale. (summary reflection)
C: 'I know I need to do this; I just get discouraged; it feels like so much to tackle.’
I: ‘It’s clear you need a boost in your confidence (reflection); maybe we could come at this from a different direction if you want.’ (adding some direction with permission)
C: Sure, I need something!'
I: ‘Let’s move away from this current weight issue and look at something else in your life you have tackled that felt really difficult, where you weren’t so sure you could do it and you were successful. What comes to mind?’(Elicit)
C: ‘Hmmm, interesting idea; well, I never thought I could go out into business on my own, always thought I would have to ‘work for the man’, but I have a really successful one man operation now as an architect.’
I: ‘Definitely! And what was it about you, your strengths, characteristics that helped you?” (open question; it would have been very tempting just to reassure here or stop here)
C: 'I went about it logically, laid out a plan; I have always done that in my life; I guessthat is a strength, characteristic of me.’
I: ‘So how might you be able to plug into that and use that strength to tackle this weight management issue?’ (open question that is moving toward a plan)
C: 'Funny to think about it that way….I sent out announcements about starting my own business and asked some friends to call me or write me email at least once a week to just keep my spirits up or remind me I could do it. I could do the same kind of thing with this…..let people who believe in me, are my friends know, ask them to help me stay the course.’
I: ‘Okay! Asking for support in a very active way; and what else might help boost that confidence, maybe thinking about the business start again if that is helpful’ (open question to continue a plan)
C: 'With the business, I set out a schedule, a way to figure out what needed to be done, a checklist, and then I went about it step by step. I think that has been missing from the weight thing….no real plan, no steps, no accountability to me.’
I: ‘You are moving along here in understanding how this needs to work for you.’ (affirmation) So, how would you apply that in this situation?’ (continuing to develop the plan)
C: ‘I have looked at the online Weight Watchers site and it is easy to join and develop a plan for what to eat each day, even if I don’t cook all the time; there is also a way to record my weight loss, keep track of things. I can’t go to those meetings, won’t work for me, but I could let me girlfriend see the plan, ask her to support it without trying to take it over. If I can look at the plan for eating each day and check off each time I did it, that would get me more organized. That is what I did to get the business going.’
I: ‘Sounds like a fuller plan is happening; and where is that confidence number now?” (affirmation and question)
C: ‘At least up to a 7, maybe even an 8; I feel good to start!’
Keep practicing!
