ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participant's work setting.
I offer all participants the opportunity to submit a 15-minute audio-tape of an interview using the MI approach before and after each workshop. This will allow for you to have feedback on your progress in learning.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants, both in Advanced and Introductory MI; Distance Learning classes are limited to 10.
This letter may be forwarded to anyone you feel could benefit as long as it is forwarded in its entirety. Past newsletters available via web site http://www.cathycoletraining.com
Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
Here is the MI News feature from January 06. Reread it and then let's check in on what happened over the year and how Stage 2, Strengthening Commitment to Change might apply. I'll call the client Jane.
NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS AND THE VALUE OF MI
It's that time of the year again...the excitement of a new year as it spreads out with all of its possibilities...a time that so many make resolutions for change. Using MI methods can be particularly helpful when assisting folks discuss these plans which often are global in nature, 'I want to go the gym more often'; 'I want to lose weight.'
We can be very helpful in having conversations that focus on asking open questions , avoiding the tendency to make a plan, underestimate the possible barriers.
Perhaps it would go like this, (C) is for client, (I) is for interviewer:
C: 'I really want to go to the gym more often this year'.
I: 'Why have you decided that?' (open question)
C: 'I know it is good for me to get exercise and I just might be
able to lose some weight; plus, my doctor said I might be able to
control these slightly high blood sugars and my tendency for
high blood pressure.'
I: 'Strong health reasons are your motivators.' (complex reflection)
C: 'Now I just have to convince myself that I can do it, not make
excuses'
I: 'What might get in your way?' (open question)
C: 'The usual stuff... making the time, the commitment, making
it important.'
I; 'What might help you with the commitment?' (open question)
C: 'When I exercised regularly a couple of years ago, I just worked
it into my day, didn't worry about the gym; I found creative ways
to do it without adding an extra time commitment.'
I: 'You were successful that way in the past; now you are talking about
the gym.' (reflection)
C: 'Hmm, that's right! Why don't I just go back to what worked in the past?'
I: 'Well, maybe looking at both ideas would be helpful....the reasons for and
the reasons not for the gym and the same for doing like you did in the past.'
(MI consistent advice about a possible approach)
C: 'That's a good idea; I really want this to work so I need to be certain
what I am going to do.'
And so the conversation continued and Jane decided to return to her previously successful way of incorporating exercise during the day.
January 2007 Strengthening commitment to change is stage 2 of MI, that time when the client has increased importance and confidence in making change and is ready for a secure plan. One aspect of follow up is checking on how the plan is going and helping to fine tune or address movement away from the change plan.
I: 'Hi Jane; we haven't seen each other for a year; how did the plan for exercise work out for you?' (open question; agenda setting) C: 'I would say overall, I did well. I managed to find time at least 3, sometimes more, days a week to do some kind of exercise. All of those health problems are more stable; I am making progress.' I: 'You are accomplishing what you wanted to, sticking to it.' (affirmation) C: 'Yes, and now I have even a greater challenge with this that I need to work on.' I: 'What is that?' (open question) C: 'I have decided to return to school for more training and I am concerned that getting so focused on this new thing will throw me off track with taking care of myself and I'll lose those health gains.' I: 'An big new venture combined with wanting to stay healthy'. (reflection) C: 'Right' I: 'What is the most useful way for us to talk about this now?' (allowing for agenda setting) C: 'I think the biggest thing is figuring out a new routine, you know, taking classes, studying, assignments, and doing what I need for health.' I: 'Sometimes it is useful to talk about typical days, the pattern of the week, or a particular block of time and then looking at how all of it might fit. That's one idea I have about how to go about it.' (MI consistent advice) C: 'That could be a good start; right now it all feels like a big blur and I work best when I have an idea of the routine.'
And so the conversation continues so that Jane can incorporate this new venture while at the same time continuing her commitment to the changes she made in the last year. . Keep practicing!
