ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participant's work setting.
I offer all participants the opportunity to submit a 15-minute audio-tape of an interview using the MI approach before and after each workshop. This will allow for you to have feedback on your progress in learning.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants, both in Advanced and Introductory MI; Distance Learning classes are limited to 10.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
ROLLING WITH RESISTANCE…..ONE MORE TIME!
Resistance…. behavior that just says 'I don't want to be here, don't want to talk about this, likely might not want to do anything about this thing'. The behavior might present with client silence, not making eye contact, saying very little, acting generally disengaged. The most important thing we need to do is not add to the resistance By using any of the blocks to listening we have discussed before. Our goals in the rolling are to have the client hear loud and clear that however they are in the moment is okay, to interact in a way with the client that maximizes the possibility that a discussion can ensue about an area of concern. I had the chance to do this in an intake this morning and decided to give you the basics of the interaction while protecting client confidentiality.
Here is how it went: (I) is for interviewer; (C) is for client
I: Thanks for keeping the appointment today; I am not certain why you were referred to me by the doctor. What is your understanding?
C: (Looking down, away, looking very displeased). I thought about calling to cancel several times; I told her I didn't want to talk about it, just want to forget.
I: You weren't pleased at having the appointment, you have driven over 2 hours to get here and and now you find I don't even know why you were referred, and you don't want to talk about this anyway.
C: (Looks up a little, tears up) Yes, I just want to forget what happened.
I: Something upsetting has happened and you just want it to go away.
C: ( A little more engaged) Yes, I was able to forget about it for 20 years and I don't know why I am having a problem now, for the last 4 years.
I: So an event that was hard, that you thought you had put to rest that is now showing up again, hitting at you, causing some problems.
C: I can't sleep, am tired all the time; I thought I had it under control.
I: If possible, I would hope you could tell me some of what happened, take it at your pace, what you want to reveal.
C: (Client now relates a story about past sexual trauma, how she was effected, how her view of self has changed)
The interview proceeded with exploring the trauma, past history, providing (with permission) information on the nature of trauma, our current understanding, and the general way that we often proceed with offering further help.
C: (Client listens, making eye contact, says nothing but seems engaged)
I: What do you think you would like to do from here? It has to be your choice And I won't pressure you. Here are the options as I see them: I can make the referral for further evaluation now, you can think about it and call me, or just say 'no thanks for now' knowing you can change your mind if you decide.
C: I want to think about it, be able to call you if I want a referral.
So, the client does not make a commitment for change but she does agree to think about the next step. Was this a success? I think so. She did talk; she did get to learn more about her problem; did get to hear what might be the next steps, how we work. She left with more eye contact and most importantly the door for the future for change was left open rather than being shut closed by my not ROLLING WITH RESISTANCE.
Keep practicing!
