ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participants work setting.
I offer all participants the opportunity to submit a 15-minute audio-tape of an interview using the MI approach before and after each workshop. This will allow for you to have feedback on your progress in learning.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants, both in Advanced and Introductory MI; Distance Learning classes are limited to 10.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
COMMITMENT TO AND TAKING STEPS TOWARD CHANGE
We have looked at the ingredients of change: Desire, Ability, Reason, and Need. Certainly we can all find examples of a person saying 'I want to lose weight; I am sure I can do it; being healthier is a good reason to do it; I need to do it for my health.' And, we all know someone who says all this but does not actually end up taking steps to losing weight.
Strong commitment to a plan and taking steps to making that plan happen are the final parts of our change stew. How we use the methods of eliciting change talk, strengthening commitment and focusing on taking steps around change are very important at this juncture.
Here is how it might sound: (I) is for interviewer; (C) is for client
C: The holidays are coming up and I need to make certain I don't gain any weight but it sure will be hard with all those parties and how much I like to cook holiday goodies.
I: A big challenge coming up for you!
C: Yes, and I go through this every year and always seem to gain at least 5 pounds over about 6 weeks. Then I get discouraged and just keep eating. I have gained 10 pounds in the last year. That can't keep happening.
I: You really want to avoid the same thing this time and seem ready to do something about it.
C: Yes, I want to and know I can; my weight is starting to have an effect on how active I can be....knees hurt from more weight: I can't exercise as easily....lots of things.
I: Okay, your motivation is high. Let's look at how you will go about this.
C: Hmmm......that is the hard part, how to pull it off.
I: What ideas do you have?
C: Well, my friend Jane says that Weight Watchers has a new program that focuses on not gaining weight during the holidays, a way to stay stable and then focus on losing weight later if you need or want to. She says it worked for her last year. I guess I could do that.
I: So you know of a plan that has worked for your friend but you are a little uncertain about whether you will use the plan.
C: Well, I have to do something and that seems like the best way. I can't think of a better plan and I just can't gain weight this time.
I: What would help you be more committed?
C: I will call Jane after we finish talking and find out when she goes to a meeting and also how to sign up on the web site.
This last statement from the client shows strong commitment and taking steps....a better indicator that change will happen.
Keep practicing!
