ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participants work setting.
I offer all participants the opportunity to submit a 15-minute audio-tape of an interview using the MI approach before and after each workshop. This will allow for you to have feedback on your progress in learning.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants, both in Advanced and Introductory MI; Distance Learning classes are limited to 10.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
GETTING CAUGHT IN THE RIGHTING REFLEX
Just what is the RIGHTING REFLEX? Simply put, it is the natural tendency we all have to 'make it right' for others. So, you say, 'what is so wrong about that?' Clearly, we all want the situation for the other person with whom we are interacting to improve.
The dangers in falling into the righting reflex are: We will decide what is best for another person. We will then start interacting with that person in a manner that attempts to influence this direction.
This is quite different from assisting the person in deciding what changes are desirable and from then eliciting and reinforcing change talk in that direction. The RIGHTING REFLEX is our well- meaning but not MI consistent attempt to get another person to make the decision we want.
Falling into this trap can result in increasing resistance. Alternately, the person can end up going along with use, only to leave and not make any changes.
True confessions of an MI practitioner here! I recently found myself in the middle of a righting reflex attempt with a young woman recently returned from serving in the Army National Guard in Iraq. She clearly had the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I was pushing her so hard to do all the strategies to not have this become a chronic condition. She was 'yes butting; met all the way!
Now there is nothing wrong with my not wanting her to have this chronic problem; however, she has not established this as a goal and I was many steps ahead of her. I could easily understand how I got there, having seen the soldiers who returned from Viet Nam and realizing how ill prepared we were to help.
So, now I try to keep some balance....hear the symptoms, offer information to provide a context for what is happening, make it clear that help is available, but restrain myself from charging ahead. When I did that last week with another returning woman, she set the agenda and started with the most pressing issues in her life, began to feel in more control and agreed to return.
Keep practicing!
