MI COACHING For individuals and agencies with previous MI training either with me or another MI trainer, I offer ongoing coaching/supervision in the application of MI. Generally, this coaching takes place by phone. You can arrange for individual or group coaching. Please email me at cathy@cathycoletraining for more information.
ABOUT MY WORKSHOPS: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participants work setting.
I offer all participants the opportunity to submit a 15-minute audio-tape of an interview using the MI approach before and after each workshop. This will allow for you to have feedback on your progress in learning.
Onsite training is limited to 15 participants, both in Advanced and Introductory MI; Distance Learning classes are limited to 10.

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
SELF EFFICACY \"If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it? even if I may not have it at the beginning.\" ~ Mahatma Gandhi ~ In some ways, this quote from Gandhi says it all about the vital importance of belief in self. Supporting self efficacy is one of the Principles of MI and for many clients will be the most important area of focus. As I have mentioned before, it is not unusual for a client to de-emphasize the importance of change when, in fact, the barrier lies in belief in self.
Throughout our work with clients from the MI approach, we are attending to the belief in self as we focus on a client's confidence. Enhancing confidence for change means eliciting from the client what he/she knows about the self that says 'I can do this!'. We can often elicit current confidence based on exploring past successes.
It might sound like this: C is for client I is for interviewer
C: 'I know it is important for me to move into this supervisory role at work....more challenges, more money, a chance to move on up the ladder. And yet, I wonder if I can do this new job.'
I: \"The reasons are clear to you and, at the same time, you are not totally certain of your ability.'
C: 'Yes, do I have what it takes to supervise people, to be more than a rule enforcer, to be able to help them improve the way my supervisor has done for me.'
I: 'You've got a good role model now. As you take a look at this person, what characteristics stand out for you?'
C: 'Ability to be fair, ability to look at each person as an individual, ability to say \"no\" when needed but with an explanation, and....a great sense of humor, really staying human.'
I: 'Strong personal traits more than technical skills.'
C: 'That's true! I guess I have those also.....after all, I am a dad and I have to do this all the time with my two kids and most of the time I do a good job.'
I: 'Yes, you have the traits; what would help you feel more confident?'
C: 'There is a mentoring period and management classes are a part of the learning to be a good supervisor. It's just taking that step into the unknown....but I didn't know how to be a dad and I'm doing that now!'
I: 'You believe in yourself; you just need to use what is offered to provide you the more technical capacity.'
C: 'That's right! I'll tell them today that I want the new role.'
