About My Workshops: I have provided MI training since 1995, following my training with Drs. Miller and Rollnick. My teaching approach is very pragmatic, focusing on the core concepts of MI and allowing the learning to progress from direct practice.
I have elected to limit the size of my workshops in order to maximize the opportunity to provide learning that can both address the concepts and practice of Motivational Interviewing while at the same time assist in the application of MI to each participant's work setting.
Range of Services A full range of training services as well as training dvds are available from the associates of cathycoletraining, inc. Please visit http://www.cathycoletraining.com for full information

Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in mental health, the justice system, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press. Additional source material: Motivational Interviewing in the Treatment of Psychological Problems, ed. Arkowitz, Westra, Miller, and Rollnick, Guilford 2007; Motivational Interviewing In Health Care, Rollnick, Miller, and Butler, Guilford, 2007.
Change Based on Future Health
We are often focused on the client's need for change based on some current, likely pressing problem and so frequently do not have the opportunity to reinforce commitment to change with clients making changes to prevent future problems. Here is how a conversation on reinforcing commitment to change might sound.
The context: a routine yearly check up with a woman who is a 25y/o. (C) is for client; (I) is for interviewer. The three parts of spirit are here for a reminder.
Partnering: as a beginning place, partnering has to address the issue of importance.
Eliciting: the basis of learning about importance and also determining possible barriers for making changes.
Autonomy: noting that when the client system leaves the office, they will make the final decisions.
I: Hi Mary. Time for that yearly check up again! Before we get to the routine physical, tell me what, if any concerns, you have today. (setting agenda)
C: I've been well all year, not even the flu, which is great! However, I have started learning in my nutrition classes about future bone loss and strength and thinking about myself.
I: The information has gotten your attention. (reflection)
C: Yes, I seem to fit the profile for someone who could have problems in the future: small frame, thin, not consistently paying attention to calcium and exercise.
I: You know the risk factors apply to you; good for recognizing this! (affirmation) And what have you thought about doing? (open question)
C: Well, I have already started some things: I am getting more dairy every day, eating my greens, and I have started walking daily and doing some light weights....really all the things I learned in class.
I: You are really taking responsibility for yourself. (affirmation). So the class got your attention and what else increased the importance for you? (open question)
C: I was talking to my mom and she just started on medication because of her bone density test; I don't want to do that in the future. And....here is the big thing....my husband and I are thinking of starting a family and I know that I need to start out with good calcium.
I: So two really big things: wanting to avoid meds like your mom has to take and really big....planning for a baby! Where should we go from here? (open question)
C: I just want to make sure I am doing all I can.
I: Absolutely; I can offer a consult for the nutritionist, particularly since planning now for the pregnancy is really a good idea. (partnering; offering concrete next step) And we should also talk about other things to consider about preparing for pregnancy, folic acid, alcohol. Let's do the physical and then we can talk more. What do you think?
C: I like that and it will be fun to see what I will be doing myself when I graduate and work as a nutritionist! And, I want to be prepared for pregnancy.
In using MI to attend to the a client initiated change, in this conversation the MD reinforced change and added to the plan.
Keep Practicing!
Cathy
