Welcome to Motivation News, a newsletter devoted to clinical information on the use of a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach to change. The authors of this approach, William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD define MI as a 'client centered, directive method for enhancing an intrinsic motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence\". This collaborative approach to working with clients has wide application in coaching, mental health, addictions, health care and health education. Information in this newsletter is taken from various source material from the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and specifically from the book Motivational Interviewing, Preparing People for Change; Miller and Rollnick, 2nd edition, 2002, Guilford Press.
The Rich Interplay of Importance, Confidence and Commitment-- A Summer Softball Story
The 'ruler' exercise is widely used in Motivational Interviewing to better understand ambivalence and elicit change talk. Essentially, the interviewer asks the client three staging questions and then uses the answers to facilitate a discussion on the topic at hand.
Taking eating in a more healthy way, the questions are: How important is it to you to eat more healthy? How confident are you in your ability to eat foods that are more healthy? How ready/committed are you to eating more healthy? Have the client rate each one on a scale of 1-5 with 1 standing for not at all and 5 as very, then return and discuss each one.
For the purposes of this newsletter I won't illustrate the discussion; we'll save that for the next newsletter. I will instead discuss the rich interplay of importance, confidence, commitment.
My husband and I have played softball for our church team for four seasons. Starting to play softball as an adult with no prior organized team experience has bee a challenge for me; however I wanted the exercise, the fun of doing an activity with my husband, and hanging out with the other players. Those were the basic importance factors and my rating of this had stayed rather high until the end of last season, where I was seriously considering quitting the team. Had you asked me at the end of summer 03, I would have said that my importance number had slipped to at least a 3 (down from 5) and my commitment number had dipped maybe to a 2 (again down from a 5).
So, what had happened? During the 03 season, suddenly our 'happy go lucky, we'll win if we can but we are here for the fun' team attitude changed and now folks were more serious! I was clearly a weak link on the team and could tell my teammates were less supportive of my not so great playing. My fledgling confidence plummeted to maybe a 1.
So, now let's go to the end of the 04 season and check in with me: my importance is back at 5, my confidence is at 3 and my commitment is at 5 (except on those 100 degree, muggy summer days!)
What happened? I could have easily rationalized this away....it is too hot to play ball; I have better ways to spend my time on Sunday afternoons, etc. However, I started to practice! I bought my own bat and began going to the batting cage. I got some idea about running harder to the bases and actually beat out some throws! I practiced catching and became less afraid of the ball. My teammates noticed and supported me. That very important self efficacy piece was addressed and enhanced.
I'm by far not the best player, but already I am driving my family a little crazy with my enthusiasm for next year, committed to increasing my skills.
So, my small story is a good reminder of how our clients struggle with this interplay of importance, confidence, and commitment. They may be going along, doing well, and suddenly some shift occurs and enthusiasm for change shifts. Remembering that ambivalence creeps in when we least expect and for a myriad of reasons helps us remain in MI mode and one more time explore and help resolve.
Happy practice and PLAY BALL!!!
